Everyone’s got an artist that soothes their soul. It’s that one band, that one CD that you put on when nothing is going right and it’s time to space out. Novi Split’s Keep Moving is that album for me.
It’s a very, very personal record- 15 songs in 35 minutes, with an emphasis on substance, not style. David J, the mastermind behind Novi Split and his ‘real’ band Kind of Like Spitting, is not making this record for people- he’s making it for himself, but he’s releasing it because that’s what artists do. His voice isn’t perfect, although it comes close, and the honesty in the songwriting is just amazing. This is barebones stuff- short, one-idea guitar lines backed up by voice and maybe a synth or two. In the faster songs, there are drums- sometimes. The songs are cryptic, which makes them great for pondering existence to…except that you can find the meaning to every single one of them on Cloak and Dagger, under the interviews section. In fact, you can find most of the album there, in mp3’s- as well as a bunch of covers he did (he likes covers). You can find more of his prolific output at his .com site, and even a couple more at his myspace site.
you will not be disappointed, if you like mellow, beautiful, acoustic indie.
