I’m sure many of you know of the band Godspeed You! black emperor but i need to profess my love for them.

I have to be honest, when i first started listening to them, it was mostly a joke. My friend had them on his mp3 player and had never listened to them. The band name by itself is enough to interest some one, but on top of that almost all of their songs are over 20 minutes long. The concept of sitting down and listening to a 30 minute instrumental song was a foreign idea to me. On top of that, the first song i listened to, “The Dead Flag Blues” starts out with a pretty deep poem, about a rotting world, going into that with a fun and joking attitude all we could do is laugh at it. I was still curious though and i continued listening to the different songs. I quickly came to realize that these songs were powerful and amazingly good.

I feel so much emotion from these songs, unlike any other band i have listened to. The range of emotions too are very clear from song to song, you feel some thing much different depending on which one you are listening to and which part of that individual song. Many of the songs contain these spectacular build-ups which make you want to go outside and beat up some evil villains, or rescue your family from a pack of angry wolves. For me most of all, it makes me want to go make a movie (that is what i do, I’m a student going into film), and write it completely around one of the songs. The songs by themselves already tell epic stories, and they make you feel like you are a part of that story.

I’m starting to get a little dramatic and cheesy so i am going to stop. If you haven’t listened to these guys, please give them a look, but all the songs are very long, so if you don’t have the patients or the time, its the type of music you can listen to while browsing the internet or writing a paper. Albums i suggest first: “Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven” and “F# A# (Infinity)”
