Unwrap Your Christmas

If you’re looking for great music to play on Christmas, I suggest Listening Live to my local radio station, The Peak. Starting at 3pm on Christmas Eve, they will play non stop Christmas music until 12 pm Christmas Day. Then, continue to listen as they “unwrap” your Christmas with acoustic music the rest of the day.

While browsing through the lovely video site Vimeo, I ran across a hilarious video that I felt needed to be posted up on Indie Anthems. The video was done by a graduate student named Ely Kim. It consists of him dancing to 100 songs in 100 days in 100 locations. The music selection consists of bands such as YELLE, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT, The Knife, and many other great indie artists. Album Review of “Album” by Girls

I discovered this band through an Indie playlist I had downloaded (free of charge) through iTunes. Girls are a band from San Francisco that experiment with mellow beats accompanied by alternative influences and simple riffs. What catches my attention is the simple structure of lyrics used to persuade such an overall effect of the one track throughout however minutes are displayed. The hit, “Hellhole Ratrace” has got to be the puncher besides “Lust for Life“. Take a listen to Girls; you may like them, you may not, your choice really.

What I’m Listening To: The Violent Femmes

Hey there guys, I’m finally back up and writing again. I should be a lot less busy nowadays, so I will be writing more frequently again. Recently, I have been listening to The Violent Femmes. The Violent Femmes were formed in 1980, and recently broke up this year. Before the split, the band was comprised of Gordon Gano, Brian Ritchie, Victor DeLorenzo, and Guy Hoffman. I am a big fan of their early work, which is what really got them noticed. Personal favorites of mine are the songs “Blister In The Sun” and “Gone Daddy Gone.” Blister In The Sun has been used frequently in movies over the years. The Violent Femmes have a style that has been called “folk punk,” a style that it seems they have invented. You can find a video for Blister In The Sun below, which in itself I find interesting.

What I’m Listening To: Kanye West

Now before you get ahead of yourself and start telling me that Kanye isn’t an indie artist, I understand that. He is simply what I have been listening to this week for the most part. I am a huge fan of the beats and sampling that he uses in his music, along with the general feel of his songs. I like Kanye’s older work more than his most recent album, though that is not to say I am not a fan of “808’s and Heartbreaks.” I just enjoy the more energetic, upbeat feel of his earlier music. I can’t pick a favorite song, but my favorite album would have to be “Graduation,” because it had so many great songs on it. I will also take this time to say that as good as Kanye is and as much as I enjoy “Stronger,” he will never be Daft Punk. One of my favorite videos is for his song “Good Morning,” which you can find below.

What I’m Listening To: Owl City

First off, I need to apologize to those of you that come around and read my articles throughout the week, I haven’t been able to put out quite as many articles recently. This should be changing pretty soon, I apologized again if it takes longer than expected. Anyway, down to business. Lately, I have been listening to Owl City. A very talented one-man band, Owl City is Adam Young, who comes from Minnesota. I’ve been a fan of Owl City since he set out in 2007, but I have now been listening to him more over this past summer. Owl City has a great electronica beat in all their songs, and Adam uses guest singers on many songs to get the perfect vocal atmosphere for each song. My personal favorite song is “The Saltwater Room,” which uses backup vocals by Breanne Duren. You can find a video of a live performance of The Saltwater Room below. I really enjoy Adam’s performance style, he brings a great feel to the stage.

What I’m Listening To: Ghostland Observatory

Lately I have been listening to Ghostland Observatory, a two man electro-rock group from Texas. They released their first album in 2005, titled “delete.delete.i.eat.meat,” an interesting name for interesting music. Ghostland Observatory has a style similar to The Bravery, with excellent guitar melodies and electronic beats. Personally, my favorite song is Sad Sad City, one of the more popular songs from their second album, “Paparazzi Lightning.” You can find the track below.

What I’m Listening To: CAKE

Recently I have picked up on listening to CAKE again, something I have not done for nearly a year. CAKE has a unique style, with monotone vocals and the use of brass instruments as well as guitar, drums, and bass. My current favorite song of theirs is “Shadow Stabbing,” one of their many songs in which the meaning of the lyrics is up for debate. Within their style, they have several more different types of songs. Their songs can be slow and somber, or upbeat and entertaining. Another interesting song, one of my other personal favorites, is “Comfort Eagle.” I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys trippy music that almost seems as if it messes with your head. Below is a video for Comfort Eagle which I think captures the feel of the song perfectly.
